Denker Drops 21 in Loss to Montana
GREELEY, Colo. – Quinn Denker dropped a season-high 21 points but Northern Colorado (17-7, 9-2 Big Sky) fell short in its comeback against Montana (16-8, 9-2) at Bank of Colorado Arena Thursday.
The Bears suffered a setback at home for just the second time this season, including the first in five games against Big Sky Conference foes. Montana, which suffered its only home loss to UNC in January, snapped the Bears six-game home winning streak.
Denker drained 7-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range and both attempts at the charity stripe. He added three rebounds, one assist and a steal.
Isaiah Hawthorne netted 17 points and seven rebounds, while Langston Reynolds tallied 14 points, six assists, four rebounds and a block. Jaron Rillie inked 10 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Montana jumped out to an 11-2 advantage and held a 21-point lead with 12:23 left in the second half behind a strong offensive performance. The Grizzlies built a 47-34 cushion at halftime, draining 68% (19-28) of their attempts, including 7-of-10 from behind the arc. They continued the hot shooting and led 65-44, before UNC sliced the deficit to 67-58, with a 14-2 run, with nine minutes remaining.
The Bears continued to click on office, cutting the gap into single digits on several occasions but never made the necessary stops to complete the comeback.
NEXT HOME GAME: UNC returns to Bank of Colorado Arena Saturday at 6 p.m., when the Bears and Montana State clash.
