GREELEY, Colo. – Regina Mpigachai earned the Luna's Taco University of Northern Colorado Student-Athlete of the Week after her record-breaking performance at the New Mexico Team Open, the athletics department announced Monday.
A senior from Geita, Tanzania, Mpigachai broke the 800m all-time record in program history in the 800m run with a time of 2:06.39. She now holds every UNC distance record, indoor and outdoors.
Her time in the 800m is the fastest time this indoor season in the Big Sky Conference, and sixth in the NCAA DI Mountain Region.
"Regina's performance at the New Mexico Team Open was nothing short of historic. Not only did she dominate the 800m with a school-record victory, but in the process, she rewrote our record books from the 800m all the way to the 10,000m," said Director of Track & Field Wayne Angel, "it's a testament to her hard work, commitment to excellence and exceptional talent. This is a phenomenal achievement, and we couldn't be more proud of her."
