GREELEY, Colo. – In a thrilling home opener at Bank of Colorado Arena, Northern Colorado women's basketball (2-0) battled to an overtime victory over Lamar (0-1) on Saturday, showcasing grit, resilience, and big-time performances from their young core.
Sophomore Neenah George secured a new career-high 26 points, delivering clutch baskets in crunch time to help the Bears secure the win. Her relentless energy on both ends of the court fueled the team's late surge. Fellow sophomore Erin Powell also turned in a stellar outing, scoring a career-best 23 points after catching fire early and sustaining her offensive rhythm throughout the contest.
Lamar jumped out to an early lead, forcing a Northern Colorado timeout after the Bears managed just seven points in a tough opening quarter. However, the momentum began to shift in the second period as Northern Colorado outscored the Cardinals 23–16, seizing a narrow 30–29 halftime advantage.
The third quarter saw Lamar regain control, pushing ahead with a 20–13 scoring edge to enter the final frame up 49–43. Yet the Bears refused to back down. Behind tough defense, great ball movement, and timely shot-making, Northern Colorado clawed its way back to force overtime—where they ultimately pulled away for good.
As a team, the Bears dominated key statistical areas, collecting 36 rebounds, scoring 48 points in the paint, and getting 12 points off the bench. Northern Colorado also shot an efficient 45.9 percent from the field, demonstrating balance and poise under pressure.
