Bears Host UNC Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – UNC hosts the 2024 edition of the UNC Invitational at Bank of Colorado Arena Thursday, Sept. 5 – Saturday, Sept. 7.
The Bears and Ole Miss open the event at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rebels and Rider start Friday's doubleheader at 11 a.m., with the Bears and Broncs facing off at 6 p.m. UNC opens the final day with a rematch against Rider at 11 a.m. The Bears and Ole Miss conclude the event at 6 p.m.
UNC enters with a 2-1 record after a 3-1 victory over Colorado State Tuesday in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Bears opened the season with a 3-1 triumph over Michigan State Friday, Aug. 30, before falling to No. 11 Florida in a tightly contested four-setter the next night.
Syd Cole leads the Big Sky Conference with 125 assists and 10.42 per set, ranking 24th and 41st nationally. Maddie Davies leads five Bears with at least two kills per set and ranks 26th or better in the Big Sky. Davies averages 3.33 kills per set, sixth in the league, while Gabi Placide slams home 2.92 (11th). Alayna Tessena's 2.58 ranking 17th, while Isabel Bennett and Brynn Reines tally 2.08 (26th) each.
Ole Miss won its opener in straight sets over Saint Louis Friday, Aug. 30, before falling to Arkansas State later that day 3-1. The Rebels closed their weekend with a 3-1 triumph over Southeast Missouri State the next day.
The Rebels lead the SEC and rank fifth in the nation with a .071 opponent-hitting percentage. Payton Brgoch paces Ole Miss with 18 total blocks, the most in the league and 31st nationally. Cammy Niesen holds the team mark with 46 digs, ranking sixth in the SEC. Emma Ammerman and Nia Washington pace the offense with 2.82 kills per set.
Rider of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference went 1-2 over the first weekend of action. They fell at Temple 3-1 Friday, Aug. 30, before splitting a pair of matches the next day. They suffered a 3-0 sweep by Radford before defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in five sets.
Paige Giehtbrock paces the Knights with 3.36 kills per set, while Kiannisha Santiago and Rylah Robinson tally 2.50 and 2.11, respectively. Simone Langford leads Rider with 43 digs, fifth in the MAAC.
