GREELEY, Colo. – In control from the opening whistle, Northern Colorado secured its second straight shutout, with a 1-0 victory over South Dakota at Jackson Stadium Thursday.
Lexi Tuite tallied her first goal of the season and Kaya Lindberg stopped the lone shots on goal by the Coyotes.
Crisp passes in tight quarters inside the 18-yard box from Brooke Holmberg and Melina Faris connected to Tuite, who whistled a shot off her right boot past the keeper. The sophomore put UNC in front in the 57th minute and the Bears defense and Lindberg did the rest.
Lindberg inked her second clean sheet in succession and extended her scoreless stretch to 188 minutes without allowing a goal. She posted the second shutout of the campaign and the seventh of her career.
UNC peppered the South Dakota goal in the opening 45 minutes, with seven shots, including four on net. The Coyotes managed three attempts overall, including two in the opening half. The Bears clanked one off the crossbar in the first half and another off the near post after Tuite's first tally of the campaign.
Head Coach Tim Barrera
Thoughts on the team's performance
"I am really pleased with the way we played. It was a really great effort from our team tonight. We are starting to create some great scoring opportunities. We scored a good goal, hit the crossbar and a post as well.
Players that stood out
I thought we got a really solid performance from Melina Faris. The entire backline played really well and shut down some dangerous attackers. Sunnie Yarnell was a threat down the left flank and created opportunities for us and of course Tuite scored the goal for us.
