GREELEY, Colo. – Caden Wagner registered four hits for Northern Colorado in the doubleheader against Oral Roberts at Jackson Field Sunday.
Wagner went 4 for 8, including a grand slam, with two runs and six runs-batted-in the two games.
The Bears (6-24-1, 5-6-1) fell in the opener to Oral Roberts (12-19-1, 4-7-1) 15-8, before the nightcap ended in a 5-5 draw, due to time constraints for the Golden Eagles travel time.
Austin Bunn and Jackson Romero notched a pair of hits each in game one, while Brandon Sanchez, Caden Wagner, Carson Gross and James Wright accounted for one each.
The Eagles built a 6-0 advantage with a pair of runs in three of the first four innings.
Kai Wagner struck out but reached on the wild pitch as the dropped third strike went between the catcher's legs and to the backstop in the fourth. He scored on a single up the middle by Romero, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The Eagles responded with four in the sixth but gave two back on a pair of sacrifice flies. Dalton Miller and Jake King pulled the Bears within seven at 10-3 with a sacrifice each.
In danger of being run-ruled for the second-straight game, UNC battled back in the eighth after allowing one in the top of the seventh and five in the eighth. With bases loaded and one out, Sanchez delivered a RBI single. On the next pitch, Caden Wagner blasted a grand slam home run over the barrier in left, slicing the deficit to 15-8, but the Bears failed to close the gap further.
In the finale, Caden and Kai Wagner combined for six hits, in eight at-bats, with one run scored and four driven in.
Kai Wagner handed the Bears their first lead of the weekend with a one-out RBI single in the first, scoring Sanchez, who worked a walk.
Oral Roberts pulled even with a solo marker in the third.
Caden Wagner pushed UNC in front in the home half of the fourth, with a two-out triple off the wall in right-center. Bunn scored from third, while Zain Zinicola raced around the bases from first, giving UNC the 3-1 advantage. Wagner recorded his third career triple, with his second of the week. He hit one in the Bears' win at Air Force Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles answered with a pair of tallies in the next frame and evened the score at 3-all.
In the seventh, Sanchez led off with a smash up the middle and moved to third on a double down the right-field line by Caden Wagner. Kai Wagner slapped a single through the left side of the defense, plating Sanchez and pushing the Bears in front. On a pop-up into shallow left field by Carson Gross, Caden Wagner caught Oral Roberts sleeping and scurried home for a two-run advantage.
In their final at-bats as the time limit passed, the Golden Eagles notched two runs and pulled even for the third time in the contest. With the winning run on first and two outs, Oral Roberts persevered the draw when the left fielder made a sliding catch.
Murphy Geinger spun a successful 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, scattering six hits. He allowed four runs – one earned – and fanned four.
