UNC Backs Up Strong Start on Second Day at Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – A day after tying the ninth lowest round in program history, Northern Colorado went one shot lower, equaling the school's seventh-best 18-hole total at the Loyola Intercollegiate – hosted by Loyola (Md.) – at Palm Valley Golf Club (par 72/7,015 yards) Monday.
The Bears remain within striking distance of the team lead with a 9-under-par 279, with one round remaining. North Dakota State shot 275 for the second-consecutive day to hold a four-stroke lead over second place and tournament host, Loyola.
Gage Messingham and Pietro Boeris matched 5-under-par 67s in the second round and helped UNC to a third-place position, five shots behind Loyola. Utah Valley and Seton Hall round out the top five at 560 and 562, respectively.
Messingham carded six birdies and one bogey on his round. He gained one position on the field, placing fourth, three shots off the individual lead. Messingham inked a five on the par-4 first hole but moved back to even on the next hole, a 515-yard par-5.
He completed the front nine at 1-under-par after a birdie on the par-5 ninth. Messingham shot a 32 after making the turn, with four-consecutive birdies. He posted fours on the final two par-five, the 11th and 14th holes, totaling a two on the par-3 12 and a three on the par-4 13.
Boeris gained four positions, one behind Messingham, in a four-way tie for fifth at 8-under-par. Boeris recorded three birdies on the par-5s while adding a three on the par-4, 390-yard 13th and a two on the par-3, 185-yard 16th holes.
TJ Shehee gained eight spots with a 2-under-par 70, moving into an eight-way tie for 34th. He birdied the second, eighth, ninth and 10th holes while recording bogeys on the par-3 fourth and par-4 13th.
Antti Vahvaselka recorded a 3-over-par 75. He entered the final five holes at 2-under par before running into trouble.
Westin Pals played the front nine at even par but struggled on the backside, finishing the day with a 7-over-par 79.
UNC tees off at 7:45 a.m. on the first three holes in the final round Tuesday.
