Bears Fall at Home Wednesday

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado (6-4) fell at home for the first time this season, suffering an 87-75 setback against St. Thomas (6-4) at Bank of Colorado Arena Wednesday.
Isaiah Hawthorne paced the Bears with 20 points in the first of two games for UNC in the Big Sky/Summit League Challenge.
Saddled with foul trouble in the opening 20 minutes, Hawthorne knocked down 7 of 10 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range in the second half. He tallied 18 points, with 5 of 6 rebounds in the final half.
The Tommies held UNC scoreless from the field over the final 6:26 of the first half and carried an insurmountable lead into the locker room.
Luca Colgeag buried a 3-pointer and pushed UNC in front at 31-28, before St. Thomas closed with a 19-1 spurt, including 11 straight points. With a free throw, Quinn Denker accounted for the lone point over the final third of the frame.
UNC trimmed the margin to four at 69-65 on a layup by Marcell McCreary, with 6:51 left. An 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes by the Tommies salted away the victory.
Langston Reynolds tallied 16 points and eight rebounds, while McCreary finished with 13 points and six boards.
UP NEXT: UNC concludes the BSC/SLC Challenge Saturday at 6 p.m., in Fargo, N.D. against North Dakota State.
NEXT HOME GAME: The Bears return to Bank of Colorado Arena Monday, Dec 16 at 6 p.m., against Air Force in the final home contest in 2024.
