The rookie from Longmont, Colorado completed 14 of his 28 passes for 221 yards and the score in the Bears 45-13 setback against Portland State.
Carver Cheeks collected four passes for 94 yards and one touchdown. Charles Garrison added 71 yards on three receptions. David Afari accounted for 92 yards from scrimmage, including 28 receiving yards on two catches. He added 64 rushing yards on six carries.
Portland State led 3-0 after one quarter on a 33-yard field goal. The Vikings added a touchdown on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
UNC trimmed the margin to three with a 75-yard drive on six plays that took over eight minutes off the clock. David Afari capped off the drive with an 8-yard run.
Portland State opened a 10-point cushion at halftime with a 3-yard run. The Vikings pushed the gap to 38-7 with two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth.
Box connected on a 35-yard TD pass to Carver Cheeks, cutting the gap to 38-13. Portland State answered with its sixth-rushing score of the game.
Caiden Meis added 32 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, Rocco Traore paced the squad with 11 tackles, including five solo, with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Cam Chappa recorded his team-leading fourth interception, with six solo tackles, while assisting on three more.
