Women’s Basketball Travels to Utah for Big 12 Action

GREELEY, Colo. – The UNC women's basketball team (2-2) will travel to Provo, Utah on Saturday, Nov. 23 to take on the undefeated Cougars of BYU (5-0). Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Marriott Center. This will be the second Big 12 matchup for the Bears this season.

BYU leads the all-time series 3-5. This will be the first time Kristen Mattio will face off against the Cougars in her time at the helm of the Bears. The last match up between the two teams was in 2018. The Cougars won 70-50 in Provo, Utah. The overall series dates back to the 1974-75 season.

Scouting the Cougars
The Cougars are off to a hot start this season, staying undefeated through the first five games. BYU has defeated two other Big Sky teams in the preseason, Idaho and Idaho State. The Cougars have also handed a loss to Wyoming, Colorado State, and McNeese.
BYU saw five players pass double digit scoring in their 85-64 win over McNeese on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Emma Calvert and Delaney Gibb each produced 18 points, while Amari Whiting, Brinley Cannon, and Kemery Congdon each added 11. Those same five players also shot above 50% from the field, respectively.
Head coach Amber Whiting is in her third year at the helm of BYU's women's basketball program. She has guided the Cougars to consecutive postseason appearances, reaching the first round of the 2023 WNIT and the first round of the 2024 WBIT.
The Mattio Era
Head Coach Kristen Mattio enters her 4th season at the helm of Bears Basketball. Under Mattio, the Bears are 45-52 since she took over the program in 2020. Mattio is just one win away from her 200th career victory and would be the first coach in program history to reach the 200-win mark.

Sophomore forward Tatum West had a career night against the Aggies of Utah State in their dominating 85-57 win. West had her first double-double of the season, grabbing a career high 14 boards to go along with 14 points and dished out five assists. Aniah Hall had another stand out performance with a game high 19 points, while Gabi Fields added two steals, four assists, and nine points.

The 2024-25 Big Sky Conference basketball schedule will feature 10 teams in a mirror schedule format. Each team will play each other twice: once at home, and once away.
The BSC Basketball Championships will feature all teams in the conference with seeding based on the 18 conference games. The championships will take place March 8-9-10-11-12, 2025, at the Idaho Central Arena in Boise, Idaho. The tournament winners will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.
2023-24 Review
The Bears finished the season with a trip to the Women's National Invitational Tournament where they lost in the first round to the University of Texas at San Antonio. Delaynie Byrne dropped 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the floor and hauled seven rebounds. Aniah Hall paced the team in blocks with two and added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and four assists. They finished with a 15-16 overall record and 5th in the BSC.

The Bears will host Central Christian College (Kan.) on Friday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m for First Responder Appreciation night and Tabor College (Kan.) on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m for Camper Night.
