Bears Sweep Idaho; Secures Top Seed

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado (22-6, 13-2) defeated Idaho (1-25, 0-15) in straight sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-13) and secured the number one seed in next week's Big Sky Conference championship Thursday at Bank of Colorado Arena.
The Bears claimed the Big Sky Conference regular-season title outright, the 15th championship, seven regular-season and eight tournaments, since UNC joined the league in 2006.
Syd Cole dished out 28 assists to eight different attackers, quarterbacking the Bears to a .372 hitting percentage, while the defense held Idaho to .152. UNC held an opponent under .200 for the 16th time in 28 matches this season.
The Bears improved to 11-2 in three-set matches this season, including a 10-1 mark in Big Sky action.
Annette Baker led UNC with nine kills, while Isabel Bennett tallied nine. Brynn Reines and Maddie Davies chipped in with seven a piece. Sam Steele donned the libero jersey and registered a team-high 11 digs.
Idaho pushed the Bears in the opening set, with 12 ties and seven lead changes. Tied at 14-all, UNC grabbed the edge at the media timeout with a kill by Baker. The Bears outscored the Vandals 11-7 to close the game.
Leading wire-to-wire in the second game, UNC rattled off 11 of the final 14 points for the victory and took a 2-0 advantage into the locker room.
The teams battled through six ties and swapped the lead twice before UNC clinched the victory with a 17-4 spurt. Trailing 9-8, the Bears moved in front by five with a 6-0 run.
