Bears Clinch Regular Season Title

OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado (21-6, 12-2) won its seventh Big Sky Conference regular season title with a sweep of Weber State (13-12, 10-4) at Swenson Gym Saturday.
The Bears claimed at least a share of their fourth regular-season title in the last six seasons, including three in four years, with the 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 triumph. They earn the top seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament and the title outright with a victory in one of their final two matches.
UNC closed the road portion of its schedule with a 13-2 mark away from Bank of Colorado Arena, including 12-0 in true road contests. In eight road contests in Big Sky Conference play, the Bears registered five sweeps and posted a 24-4 mark in 28 sets.
Gabi Placide and Isabel Bennett paced UNC with 11 kills each. Annette Baker recorded 10 kills. Syd Cole dished out 43 assists to six Bears and dropped in five kills. Donning the libero jersey, Sam Steele recorded 20 digs.
The Bears hit .311 against the Wildcats, the league leader in opponent hitting percentage at .183. UNC held Weber State to a .132 attack percentage.
Knotted at 17-all, the Bears doubled up Weber State, scoring eight of the final 12 points and grabbed the early advantage.
The teams swapped the lead five times, with seven ties in game two. Weber State moved in front 18-12 before UNC utilized a 13-4 run to close the game. The Bears responded with a 7-1 run following a time-out and evened the set at 19-all. They pulled in front on a kill by Baker after the Wildcats second stoppage during the spurt.
The teams traded the first 10 points in game three, resulting in five draws. Bennett pushed UNC in front at 6-5, with a kill and sparking a 20-10 run to secure the victory and the regular-season title.
