GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado rolled to a four-set victory (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21) over Idaho State (18-7, 9-4 Big Sky) at Reed Gym Thursday.
"I really like how composed we played," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "Idaho State is emotional team and it is hard not to ride the highs and lows with them."
The Bears (20-6, 11-2 Big Sky) maintained their one-match advantage over Weber State at the top of the Big Sky Conference Standings. UNC and the Wildcats meet in Ogden, Utah Saturday at 1 p.m., the only meeting between the two teams this season.
Syd Cole finished three kills shy of a triple-double, inking 41 assists, 13 digs, seven kills and one block. Gabi Placide tallied 17 kills, eight digs, two blocks, two assists and one ace. Isabel Bennet registered 16 kills and four blocks.
"I thought we played our style in a tough match tonight," Oates said. "We didn't play perfect but we did just enough to get the win. Gabi and Izzy scored well for us but it was a really good team win."
Knotted at 21-21, UNC closed the opening set with a 4-1 run, grabbing the early advantage. Idaho State turned the tables in game two. The Bengals ran off five of the final eight points, flipping a 20-20 tie into a two-point victory and evened the match at one set a piece.
Following intermission, the Bears secured the victory with wins in sets three and four. They never trailed in game three and after Idaho State knotted the frame at 9-9, UNC built a 3-point advantage and held the Tigers at bay the rest of the way.
The Bears overcame a slow start with a 4-0 spurt, building a 10-8 advantage and maintained an advantage the remainder of game four. They opened a five-point margin, before the Tigers closed the gap down to two at 21-19. UNC secured the victory with a 4-2 spurt.
