Bears Win Sixth in a Row

CHENEY, Wash. – Gabi Placide matched a career-high18 kills and helped Northern Colorado (16-5, 7-1 Big Sky) to its sixth-consecutive win Friday at Reese Court.
"It was a good win for us," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We were not very sharp and we gave up way too many unforced errors at the service line and attacking that really kept them in it but I do like a lot of things we did. I thought at times we were aggressive and made good decisions. Gabi was hard to defend tonight and we knew the backline attack would be a good matchup against this team, so we wanted to set that a lot."
The Bears defeated Eastern Washington (9-9, 5-3 Big Sky) in straight sets (25-23, 27-25, 26-24). UNC registered its fifth sweep during the six-match winning streak and third straight.
Placide added a career-high four service aces, with five digs and two blocks.
Syd Cole handed out 38 assists to six different attackers and guided the Bears offense to a .324 hitting percentage. She tacked on five digs and a block.
SET 1: The Bears committed five service errors but held Eastern Washington to a .111 hitting percentage and finished with a 3-0 run to grab the early advantage. UNC had the Eagles to eight kills, forcing five errors on 27 attacks. Offensively, Gabi Placide paced the Bears with six of the team's 16 kills, helping UNC to a .265 hitting percentage. They added three points at the service line.
SET 2: Trailing most of the game, including 22-20, UNC ran off seven of the final 10 rallies and carried a 2-0 advantage into the intermission. The Bears outhit Eastern Washington .359-.322.
SET 3: UNC jumped out to a 6-1 margin after the break and forced a timeout by the Eagles. A 10-8 advantage by the home squad trimmed the deficit to 14-11 and the Bears called for a stoppage.
They burned their second time out three serves later with the contest knotted at 14-all. A kill by the Eagles evened the score at 20-20 but once again UNC closed strong, scoring six of the final 10 points.
Brynn Reines tallied nine kills, three aces and a block. Alayna Tessena notched eight kills and a dig.
Isabel Bennett and Maddie Davies netted seven kills and two blocks each.
Sam Steele donned the libero jersey and dug 13 attacks, with one kill. Bella LePore accounted for six digs, while GA McCarter inked four.
