UNC Wins 20th Straight Match Against Montana

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado defeated Montana for the 20th-straight time, with a three-set sweep at Bank of Colorado Arena Saturday.
UNC (15-5, 6-1 Big Sky) converted 48.4% of its attacks against the Grizzlies (6-13, 1-7), the highest in program history since moving to the NCAA Division I level before the 2004 campaign.
The Bears won for the fifth time in a row, with four of the five victories ending in a sweep. They improved to 5-1 in three-set matches this season. UNC moved back atop the Big Sky standings, ahead of Sacramento State, which improved to 5-1, with a win at Portland State Friday.
Gabi Placide tallied 15 kills on 24 swings, without an attack error. She's the first UNC student-athlete to tally at least 12 kills without a miscue in a match since Cece Huhn accomplished the feat against Santa Clara Sept. 12, 2022. Placide added seven digs and three blocks.
Maddie Davies tallied 10 kills and three blocks, while Brynn Reines inked nine kills, two aces at the service line and a block.
Syd Cole distributed 37 of the team's 44 assists to six different Bears and chipped in with four kills on five attempts, without a miscue.
Alayna Tessena notched seven kills and two digs. Isabel Bennett totaled six kills.
Five Bears accounted for a kill and a dig, while 11 of the 12 to see action tallied at least a dig.
The 52 kills tied for the eighth-most in a three-set match in the NCAA Division I program era.
Set 1: The Bears posted a season-high 19 kills, converting 53.3% (19-2-30) of their attacks. Montana hung with the Bears offensively, cashing in 38.7% (14-2-31) of their swings. UNC registered three service aces, while not surrendering one. Gabi Placide tallied seven kills on eight swings, without an error, while Isabel Bennett went 4 of 6. Syd Cole accounted for 16 of the team's 18 assists.
Set 2: UNC continued the offensive onslaught, posting a 56.6% success rate on attacks, with 17 kills on 28 attacks and just two errors, while the defense thwarted the Grizzlies offense. The Bears held Montana to a 14.3% success rate, with nine kills and five errors on 28 attempts. Placide delivered five kills on seven attacks, without a mistake.
Set 3: The Bears continued to apply pressure with their offense. They committed just two miscues on 35 swings and tallied 16 attacks. UNC held the Grizzlies to 12 kills on 34 swings, with a match-high six attack errors, with three of the Bears four blocks in the final game.
