Bears Rally to Defeat Colorado State

GREELEY, Colo. – University of Northern Colorado rallied to defeat Colorado State in five sets at Bank of Colorado Arena Tuesday.
The Bears improved to 1-2 on the campaign with their third-consecutive victory over the Rams. Colorado State entered the contest receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll after knocking off No. 10 Kentucky to open the season.
Down 9-5 in set four and trailing two games to one, Northern Colorado scored six of the next eight points to grab its first lead of the game at 11-10. After four ties and a lead change, Syd Cole surprised the visitors by dumping a kill in and pushing the Bears ahead 15-14.
The Rams knotted things at 22-all, before a kill by Maddie Davies nudged the home side in the lead. Brynn Reines followed an attack error from each side with a kill for set point, forcing a fifth and decisive game.
After five ties through the first 12 points in game five, an attack error by Colorado State nudged the Bears ahead 7-6. Each time Northern Colorado built a 2-point cushion, the Rams answered, until Davies slammed home a kill and opening the gap to 13-10. Cole equaled a Colorado State kill, setting up match point, which Isabel Bennett and Reines teamed up for a block and sealing the comeback.
The Bears hit .407 and converted 60% of their side-out opportunities to claim the opening game. They held Colorado State to a .259 hitting percentage in game one.
Colorado State grabbed a 2-1 advantage by outhitting the Bears .298 to .016 over the second and third sets. The Rams forced 18 of the 29 errors committed by Northern Colorado during the span.
The Bears registered a .366 hitting percentage in the three sets they won.
