Butler Joins UNC Swimming & Diving Staff

GREELEY, Colo. – University of Northern Colorado head swimming and diving coach Lisa Ebeling announced the hiring of Jacob Butler as the Bears' new diving coach Wednesday.
"It's an honor to welcome Jacob to the Bear family. His positive energy was evident from our first conversation and his passion for diving is contagious!" said Ebeling. "I'm excited to watch our program reach new heights and our divers thrive under his leadership."
Butler joins Northern Colorado after spending the 2022-23 campaign at Western State University of Colorado.
"Really excited to join the UNC program and the Greeley community," said Butler. "I would like to thank Coach Ebeling for this opportunity and look forward to working with our fantastic student-athletes."
Under his tutelage during his 20-year coaching career, Butler collected five Coach of the Year awards and mentored an AAU champion and one who became an NCAA DII national champion. He trained and guided two freshmen – both former walk-ons – to qualify for the Division II National Championships. Each student-athlete established new school records at the Western State University of Colorado.
After his competitive diving career concluded, he began his coaching career by giving lessons, creating a recreation team before coaching at the high school level, assisting with a club, and leading an established club before moving into the college ranks.
Butler began diving in high school and advanced to the finals during his senior season – the lone non-club diver to reach the championship round. After a short break from competition, he committed to learning his old list before switching to masters. As a master's diver, Butler won nine National Championships and five World medals. After the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, he hung up the chamois and dedicate his time to coaching.
When not on the deck, the Colorado native can be found enjoying any number of activities, including woodworking, playing frisbee golf, hiking, or anything else that might bring a new experience.
