Erokhina Breaks UNC Record; Five Bears Podium in Final Day of WAC Championships

PHARR, Texas – Freshman Maria Erokhina set a new UNC record in the 200 breast at the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, taking a second-place finish in the event with a time of 2:13.47. Additionally, four other swimmers claimed podium finishes as the Bears completed competition at the conference championships.
The Bears exceled in the 200 breast as sophomore Bryanna Ungs claimed third with a personal best time of 2:15.76, which sits as third fastest in program history. Sunna Svanlaug Vilhjalmsdottir set a personal best with a fifth-place finish, clocking in at 2:17.27, resetting her 8th fastest time at UNC. Lastly in the event, Emina Pasukan bested her personal record by three one-thousandths of a second with a time of 2:19.41.
Payten Irwin turned in a blazing time of 1:59.17 in the 200 fly to claim second place. Her time also ranks second fastest in the WAC this season.
Ali Jackson continued her dominance in the pool, taking third in the 100 free with a personal best of 49.47, which sits as second fastest in UNC history.
In the 1650 free, Anna Austin set a new personal record finishing third with a time of 16:46.97, shaving nearly 10 seconds off her previous record which was set at the WAC championships a year prior. Her time of 16:46.97 now ranks third in program, history. Cheyanna Cordova clocked in the 9th fastest time in UNC history in the 1650 free with a time of 17:10.94, for a ninth-place finish.
Claire Timson took 13th in the 200 back, but her time of 2:01.78 is a new personal best and ranks sixth at UNC.
With the strong results from the Bears, UNC finished in third place in the team standings, finishing with 493 points.
