Campbell Sets Championship Record as Bears Start Strong in Prelims

MOSCOW, Idaho – Freshman Jerome Campbell set a new Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championship record as he blazed through the 60m hurdles prelims with a time of 7.63, highlighting Northern Colorado's performances at the conference championships on Friday.
Campbell's time of 7.63 in the 60m hurdles prelims also marks the fifth fastest time in the NCAA this season. Campbell also claimed first in the 60m dash, claiming a second school record with a time of 6.70.
Jesse Hayward broke a third school record on the day, finishing the 800m prelims in 1:50.19.
Kiana Van Haaren brought home UNC's first hardware of the weekend as she podiumed in the long jump, taking third with a mark of 5.60m.
"I thought that both of our teams performed well today, and really maximized our scoring opportunities for tomorrow," director of track and field Wayne Angel said. "We had the best first-day performance ever as a team in program history. We set three school records, a Big Sky meet record and had 14 personal bests. Today was very special.
"I thought we had a strong start with Kiana and Steve in the field events followed by the exciting performances of our sprinters," Angel added. "We qualified individuals in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, mile and all the relays for tomorrow. I'm very proud of the way we competed across the board. I am confident that we will have a great finish tomorrow".
Freshman Raphael Egbuchilem finished second in the 400m prelims with a time of 47.71, posting the fourth fastest time in the Big Sky this season. Egbuchilem also advanced to the 200m finals with a fifth-place finish in the prelims.
Regina Mpigachai claimed first in the 800m prelims with a time of 2:09.70.
Wendira Moss advanced to the finals in the 400m and 200m, placing sixth in both races.
Zach Wells finished third in the 800m prelims with a time of 1:53.01 and will advance to the 800m finals on Saturday.
August Van de Weijer took fifth and sixth place finishes in the 400m and 200m, respectively to advance to those finals.
Steven Cross finished the heptathlon, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Cross ended the multi event ranked 11th with 4457 points.
