Bears Break 200 Medley Relay Record in Opening Day at WAC Championships

PHARR, Texas. -- The 200-yard medley relay team of Katelyn Bergin, Bryanna Ungs, Payten Irwin and Ali Jackson set a new program record as the Northern Colorado swimming and diving team opened up the first day of competition at the Western Athletic Conference 2023 Swimming and Diving Championships.

The 200 medley relay team broke the program record by over half a second with a time of 1:40.11, surpassing the previous mark of 1:40.66 set in 2019.

In addition to the new program record, six swimmers set personal bests. All four members of the 200 medley relay set bests in their corresponding legs of the event, as Bergin recorded a 50-back time of 25.78, Ungs clocked a 27.77 split in the 50 breast, Irwin had a time of 23.87 in the 50 fly, and Jackson had a 22.69 in the 50 free. Irwin also had the second fastest split time of all the swimmers of the event, as one of only two to break the 24-second mark in her leg.

In the 800 free relay, Anna Austin broke her personal best by over 1.5 seconds, turning in a time of 1:50.18 in the opening leg of the relay. Paula Nunez also set her best split time in the relay, with a 1:51.55 on the final leg. The team of Austin, Jana Hellenschmidt, Lily Mayer and Nunez, turned in a total time of 7:25.48.

Rounding out competition for the day, Madison Berg set a personal best in the 3m, scoring 241.80.

Northern Colorado continues the WAC championships tomorrow with three swimming events and one diving event. On the docket are the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 1m dive.
