GREELEY, Colo. – Freshman Lexi Tuite earned Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Celina, Texas, native collected her first weekly honor, with the Bears' first hat trick in the D1 era. She became one of 13 freshmen in the nation with at least three goals in a game this season.
"Certainly, a great accomplishment for Lexi to get the first hat trick by a Bear since the move to DI, especially to be able to do it in her first 38 minutes of play," UNC head coach Tim Barrera said. "She works hard with a nose for the goal and will only get better, with a big future ahead of her."
She garnered the accolade after recording a hat trick in the season finale against Eastern Washington Sunday. Tuite tallied her three goals in the first 47 minutes of action, including the game-winner in the ninth minute.
Tuite became the first Bear to register a hat trick since the 2001 campaign when Mandy Nilsen and Kiha Thomas - both UNC Hall of Famers - netted multiple hat tricks each.
Before Tuite accomplished the feat Sunday, Nielsen inked the last hat trick in school history. She found the back of the net three times in eight minutes, helping the Bears to a 4-1 road victory at North Dakota State Oct. 20, 2001.
