Bears Tie Big 12 Opponents Kansas State on the Road

MANHATTAN, Kan.-Â UNC Soccer showed off their resilience as they fought until the final seconds of the match to end in a 1-1 tie with Big 12 opponent Kansas State on Sunday.Â
Â
Kansas State started out aggressive offensively putting nearly constant pressure on goalkeeper Kaya Lindberg. However, despite facing 14 shots in the first 45 minutes of play, Lindberg remained perfect in goal with 5 saves to keep the Wildcats off the board.Â
Â
What began as a one-sided half in K-State's favor, shaped up to include strong play at midfield from the Bears, and two solid scoring chances set up by Riley Kaali-Nagy at the front of the net. Â
Â
In the first half, UNC recorded just two shots from Haley O'Nan and Lauren Fuller, leaving the game scoreless heading into the half.Â
Â
Coming into the second half, Kansas State remained vigilant and got on the board quickly to lead the match 1-0. Â
Â
The Bears did not back down, despite the flood of shots Lindberg continued to face throughout the second half. Picking up the pace, they created some good scoring chances including shots on goal by O'Nan and Melina Faris, looking to even the score.Â
Â
With just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, Britney Donais found the back of the net to score her third career goal, thanks to an assist from O'Nan that would act as the game's equalizer. Â
Â
Despite the large discrepancy in shots, with the Wildcats outshooting the Bears 27-9, UNC secured the stalemate, making the shots they took count, and split the points. This was much thanks to Lindberg's career 11 saves on the day in an impressive performance against the team's first Power Five opponent of the season.Â
Â
What They SaidÂ
"A great result for the Bears today. Kansas State put us under a ton of pressure, especially in the first part of the match, and credit to our players for absorbing all that pressure. I really love the mentality of our team to stay in it and fight back, and they scored a great goal," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We had a few chances at the end to maybe steal one, but certainly a great result for us. If they had scored early, it would have been tough for us, but we held the fort. Kaya in goal was fantastic. Just a tremendous performance by her. She was confident, made a ton of saves, and really was in charge. I'm really, really proud of her."Â Â
