Northern Colorado Men's Basketball adds Riley Abercrombie to its roster
GREELEY, Colo. – Head coach Steve Smiley and the Northern Colorado Men's Basketball team finalized its 2022 recruiting class with the signing of graduate transfer Riley Abercrombie. The 6-9, 220 pound forward comes to Greeley from Rice.
Abercrombie can stretch the floor, shooting 40.8% from three in 2021-22. He played in 28 games the past two seasons for the Owls, starting in 15 games in the 2020-21 season. The Wollongong, Australia native is a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was on the NABC Honors Court in 2021.
He started his career at Boise State redshirting his first season before seeing limited action in 2019-20. A graduate of Clear Lake High School in Houston, Abercrombie averaged 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds as a senior. He helped Clear Lake to the quarterfinals of the UIL 6A Texas State Championship Tournament as a senior and to the state title game as a junior.
Coach Smiley on Abercrombie
"We're thrilled to announce the addition of Riley Abercrombie to our program. He is exactly what we were looking for, both on and off the court. With a roster that has a lot of extremely talented but inexperienced youth, our goal was to get one more veteran piece to go along with our current vets Matt Johnson II (sixth year), Daylen Kountz (fifth year) and Dalton Knecht (fourth year) to solidify our core. Riley fits that bill, as he'll be entering his fifth year in college next season after graduating this spring from Rice University. The bonus is that Riley still has two years left to play as a grad transfer. His maturity and professionalism are off the charts and he'll fit in immediately with our group. On the court, our goal was to get some more skill and shooting in our forward position to help replace the departure of Bodie Hume and Riley's proven ability to shoot from deep is exactly what we need. At 6'9" and 220 pounds, Riley can also slide over to the post position if needed to help us really stretch and space the floor, and his skill set regardless of position is much more than just shooting. Riley has a great feel for the game on the perimeter and is also comfortable and skilled playing out of the post. He has had a lot of impressive moments playing in one of the better leagues in the country while at Rice (Conference USA), and we think he'll have the chance to have an immediate impact at UNC."
Abercrombie has two years of eligibility remaining. His signing brings Northern Colorado's class to a total of five alongside Langston Reynolds, Brock Wisne, Juju Ramirez and Caleb Shaw.
