Trio of Bears Headed to Wrestling NCAA Championships

GREELEY, Colo. - A trio of Northern Colorado Bears are headed to the Motor City next week. Andrew Alirez, Alan Clothier and Jace Koelzer will represent the Blue & Gold at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships as the brackets were announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Alirez and Koelzer automatically qualified for the championships with their performance at the Big 12 Championships while Clothier earned an at-large bid.

Alirez enters as the highest seed as the No. 5 in the 141 weight class coming off winning the Big 12 Championship. The Greeley native became the first person in program history with won a Big 12 title. He is 22-4 on the year and will face Collin Gerardi of Virginia Tech in the first round.

Koelzer punched his first ticket to the NCAA Championships by finishing in sixth place at the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa. The redshirt freshman is the No. 30 seed in the 125 lbs bracket. A two-time Big 12 placer, he will face Pat Glory from Princeton in the first round.

Clothier earned the distinct honor of becoming a four-time NCAA qualifier with his at-large selection this year. Competing at 197 lbs this year, he will be the No. 27 seed in Detroit. He will battle Jacob Warner from Iowa in the first round.

The first round of the NCAA Championships start at 10 am on March 17 airing on ESPNU
