Bears tie 3-point record in opening season blowout

GREELEY, Colo.—Depositing a school record tying 15 shots from distance, Northern Colorado throttled Northern New Mexico, 91-50, in the team's season opener on Monday.
Northern Colorado's (1-0) shooting stroke was present from the start with 4-of-7 makes from 3-point range in the opening quarter. The Bears made four more in the second quarter to open up a 44-26 lead at the break.
By the end, six different players sunk at least one make from distance as the team shot 42.9 percent (15-of-35) from beyond the arc.
Hannah Simental, a preseason All-Big Sky selection, led the assault with 5-of-8 shooting from deep to share game-high honors with teammate Luka Malinka as both players finished with 17 points. Malinka went 4-for-6 from deep and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to accumulate her total.
The 15 makes from 3-point land tied the school's NCAA DI record which has been reached on four previous occasions, the last during the 2017-18 season against Sacramento State.
The Bears will now turn their attention to an in-state battle at Denver University. Opening tip against the Pioneers is set for 6 p.m. inside the Hamilton Gymnasium.
