ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—With five different players sinking at least one attempt from distance, Northern Colorado stayed within striking distance before a late run propelled the undefeated University of New Mexico to the Lobo Classic championship on Sunday.
For helping lead Northern Colorado (3-5) to a 2-1 record over the three-day event at The Pit, Dalton Knecht and Daylen Kountz were recognized as All-Tournament selections.
After setting a career high with 22 points on Friday, Knecht topped the mark with a 29-point outing after a 12-of-19 shooting performance that included 4-of-8 makes from 3-point range. The effort was the fourth time in five games Knecht had breached the 20-point plateau.
Down by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Bears remained undaunted and used the long ball to whittle away at the deficit and eventually pull to within seven (75-68) with 8:53 to play.
A 16-0 run by the Lobos, however, sank the recovery efforts for the 98-74 New Mexico win.
Kountz ended the night with 11 points but averaged 18.3 over the weekend after posting 21- and 23-point efforts in wins against North Dakota State and Jacksonville State.
UNC will face another team from the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 3 when it crosses county lines to face Colorado State. Opening jump against the Rams is set for 2:30 p.m.
