EDINBURG, Texas—After holding the UTRGV offense in check for the first three quarters, a 20-8 run by the home team handed the Northern Colorado women's basketball team its first loss of the season with a 61-55 defeat on Tuesday.
In the middle of a low-scoring contest, Northern Colorado (2-1) used a 7-0 run in the second quarter to create its initial separation over UTRGV (2-1).
The Vaqueros tied the contest at 31-31 early in the third quarter, but the UNC defense held their opponents to seven points in the stanza to carry a 38-33 advantage entering the finale.
A Delaynie Byrne layup pushed the Bears' lead to 47-41 with 6:50 left to play, but the team was held to just two field goals the rest of the way while the Vaqueros converted their final six free throw attempts to protect the win.
Hannah Simental led the Bears with 16 points and was immediately followed by a 15-point performance by Averee Kleinhans. Byrne ended the night with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Iyana Dorsey dropped a career-high 27 points to lead UTRGV.
The Bears will continue their Texas trip with a Thursday tilt at Incarnate Word. Opening tip against the Cardinals is set for 5 p.m. MT from San Antonio.
