Bears roll past Thunderbirds, 3-1

CEDAR CITY, Utah. – Three different Bears found the back of the net on Friday as Northern Colorado kicked off its 2021 Big Sky campaign with a resounding, 3-1, win over Southern Utah.
Head coach Tim Barrera's crew was ready to go from the first whistle.
Rushing down the pitch, the Bears created a couple of early chances inside the first two minutes. UNC forged an early breakthrough via a Lexi Pulley flip-throw that landed at the feet of Taylor Bray, who tucked home her first goal of the season in the bottom-left corner.
UNC kept the pedal to the metal all half long. Nine first-half shots, including five on goal, had most of the action happening in the Bears' offensive half.
Southern Utah managed four shots but even the one shot on frame was an easy save for Morgan Bury.
The Thunderbirds' best effort came when they played a free-kick quickly but SUU's shot clamored off the post.
Northern began the second 45 the same way it ended the first.
Always on the front foot, UNC caused problems down the channels and it wasn't long before the Bears netted a second goal.
In the 51st minute, senior midfielder Olivia Seddon picked up a loose ball off a rebound, dodged one defender and smashed home her first goal of the season in the top-right corner.
Southern Utah mounted a quick response. After just one shot on goal in the first half, the Thunderbirds cranked up the pressure, tallying three in the second. Bury was up to the task, coming in with a pair of dynamite saves to keep SUU off the scoreboard.
After creating a chance with her patented flip-throw in the opening half, Lexi Pulley wasn't going to head home without a point. On a play that started with a great kick from Bury, Taylor Bray headed a ball perfectly into the path of Pulley who slotted home her fifth goal of the season to make it 3-0.
The Bears defended admirably as Southern Utah was desperate to find a goal. It wasn't until the 90th minute with a mere six seconds on the clock when UNC was given a handball, allowing the Thunderbirds to score from the penalty spot as the buzzer sounded to end the game 3-1.
What They Said
Head Coach, Tim Barrera
"We started the game off well and kept pushing all afternoon long. A really nice goal from Olivia [Seddon] who pinged one in the top corner gave us a good cushion. Taylor Bray kept working all game long and delivered a great ball for Lexi [Pulley] to finish. I'm very proud of the effort everyone gave today.
Give credit to Southern Utah, though. They had some good opportunities and kept pushing until the final whistle. We'll reload and get going again quickly for NAU on Sunday."
