Bears season comes to a end in Big Sky Championship match
4/2/2021 11:15:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – Fighting tooth and nail until the bitter end, Northern Colorado just couldn't find a way past Weber State, falling 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 17-25, 17-25).
You couldn't have scripted a more evenly-matched first set. Like the true heavyweight bout the title match represented, both programs took turns throwing haymakers.
Ten times each school tied up the match in the opening frame and the score changed hands four separate times in a thrilling affair.
Down but never out, Northern Colorado trailed 23-21 late in the opening frame. Cool, calm and collected, the Bears saved a set point and went on a 5-1 run capped off by the sixth kill of the set to steal the opening frame away from the Wildcats.
As with most matches, big swings came down to the serve and pass game. In the second set, Weber State cranked up its serving effort and with it, the Wildcats built some separation from the Bears.
WSU ran off to a quick 11-3 lead in the third set but that all changed with Daisy Schultz stepped to the service line.
The senior ran off seven straight points, helped by the terrific blocking duo of Rachel Hickman and Cece Huhn.
Hickman and Huhn racked up seven blocking assists apiece.
An ace, an error and a block from Weber State erased all the momentum UNC had earned, leading to a two-set advantage from the Wildcats.
Once more, WSU raced out to an early lead in the fourth. Several times Northern Colorado fought its way back into the set. Whether it was the dynamic blocking duo of Hickman and Huhn or the stellar play from MaKenzie Harris, UNC wasn't going to go down without a fight.
In the middle of the fourth set, Harris posted four straight kills to force a timeout from Jeremiah Larsen and the Wildcats.
In the end, Weber State's aggressiveness off the serve and overall scrappiness extending points proved too much to handle, grabbing the victory and the Big Sky Tournament title.
