Bodie Hume's layup with one second left lifted UNC over Montana
MISSOULA, Mont. – If it's a game between Northern Colorado and Montana in Missoula it's guaranteed to come down to the wire. To no surprise it did again on Saturday night as Bodie Hume's layup with one second left helped UNC edge UM 64-62.
The Bears become the first program since Weber State at the beginning of the century to win three straight games in Missoula.
Tre'Shon Smoots assisted on the game-winning basket, but it was his career-best 16-point effort that was key in the Bears win. He nailed a 3-pointer with 52 seconds that put UNC back in the lead, and he nailed a pair of clutch free throws.
Northern Colorado led for most of the game jumping out to a 13-point lead in the first half with a 22-8 run. Daylen Kountz led the charge during it with 10 of the team's 22 points.
Kountz finished the game with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Montana cut the Northern Colorado lead to 32-29 by half.
The teams traded the lead four times and were tied three times in the second half, including twice in the final 1:38.
Montana built a five point lead with 2:32 left at 59-54 and lead to the thrilling finish. Hume and Kur Jockuch made their biggest impact on the game after missing the majority of the second half with foul trouble down the stretch.
A three-pointer from Hume cut the UM lead to two and then Jockuch showed off his athleticism on a great read to tie the game with 1:38 on the clock. Montana took one final lead with a jumper just before the one minute mark before Smoots responded with this trey.
The Griz tied the game to set up Hume's last second heroics when Robby Beasly was fouled shooting a three and made all three free throws.
