Northern Colorado looks to return to the mat with the release of their 2021 condensed schedule.
GREELEY, Colo. – Over nine months since Northern Colorado wrestling's season ended early with the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Championships, the No. 25 ranked Bears released their 2021 wrestling season schedule. The team will solely wrestle in dual or tri-dual format competitions during the regular season, hosting a pair at home.
"We are excited to have our schedule finalized for the 2020-2021 season," Head Coach Troy Nickerson said. "With the delayed start, things are finally becoming more real and the guys are excited to get back on the mats after a nine-month layoff."
Northern Colorado comes into the season with the highest national ranking in program history, being ranked 25th. The Bears are returning to the mat after qualifying a program high five wrestlers for the NCAA Championships last season. The Bears roster features seven NCAA qualifiers, with all five NCAA qualifiers returning to the lineup this season, along with 2019 NCAA Qualifier Chris Sandoval and transfer Jackson Hemauer, also a 2019 NCAA Qualifier.
The Bears will host a pair of top 25 teams during the season. Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State comes to Greeley on January 22. Twenty-fifth ranked Fresno State will be at Bank of Colorado Arena as a part of a tri-dual with Air Force on February 6. All home duals will be streamed on Flo Wrestling.
UNC opens the season in Laramie, Wyoming where they will take on the No. 23 Wyoming Cowboys on January 3.
With just two home dates, the Bears will spend most of the season traveling. Following the quick trip to Wyoming, travel will continue in California with a tri-meet against Cal Poly and California Baptist on January 11.
Northern Colorado then travels to Colorado Springs to take on South Dakota State and Air Force in a tri-dual competition on January 17. They face West Virginia on January 31 in Morgantown.
Regular season competition traveling ends with a trip to Iowa on February 13 when they will take on Northern Iowa and No. 8 Iowa State at Northern Iowa.
"We have been able to put together a busy and challenging schedule that will prepare our team for the NCAA Championships. While it is a shortened season, it is going to be a sprint from the first dual to Big 12s. We are looking forward to taking on each match one by one and building towards a championship season," Nickerson said.
The Big 12 Conference Championships will be in Tulsa, OK on a date that is TBD. The NCAA Championship tournament will be held March 18-20 in St. Louis, Mo.
Attendance for all home duals will be based upon local and state COVID-19 protocols.
