Todd Lowe, Senior Director of Bio Med
What does a Director of Bio Med do?
I am responsible for driving and supporting large-scale, system-wide programs and processes, with a focus on quality of outcomes and superior service. This position serves as the primary advisor to the organization's senior management. I monitor and oversee compliance of equipment safety, regulatory standards, customer service, stakeholder relations, workforce, and financial goals and objectives as developed by the Board of Directors and senior executive management.
How did you handle the shortage of ventilators?
When NOCO was experiencing its first surge in March we began to plan aggressively by asking basic what-if scenarios and how-to questions. Being part of a larger organization allowed Technology Management, the business unit in Banner that supports medical equipment and technology, to leverage our trusted business partnerships. Some of our partnerships have been develop over the past 30+ years.
These partnerships also allowed us to quickly search, locate, and deliver the needed physical assets to the NOCO area hospitals.
How did you and your team become creative when supplies started running short?
Again, it truly was our collective ability to leverage our trusted business relationships which have been developed over decades and that we continue to develop daily. Our efforts continue today, and we are in a very good position to deliver the highest quality of care to our communities.
How do you feel better prepared for future pandemics?
Without doubt Banner NCMC and our other hospitals throughout the Western Region are in an excellent position to respond to our communities' needs not only from a medical equipment inventory position but also from a total quality of care perspective. This allows our patients the best opportunities for enhanced quality of care outcomes.
How did you acquire new technology in a timely manner to help COVID patients?
New technology really did not play a significant role in treating our COVID patients. It was quickly executing on existing technologies and effectively and safely deploying these technologies. One of these technologies that is top of mind is our ability to remotely view and monitor our patients. Another is the ability for patients' families to have virtual visits with their loved ones. It really sounds rather simple to deploy doesn't it? However, within the Banner setting our network security, which protects our patient's health care information, means there is no such thing as "Plug and Play".
