Fifty-Four Student-Athletes Named Academic All-Big Sky Members

UNC Athletics had 54 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Sky honors
FARMINGTON, Utah – Northern Colorado athletics had a great fall season on the field and excelled in the classroom. The Big Sky Conference announced its 2019 Big Sky Fall All-Academic teams on Friday with UNC placing 54 student-athletes on the list. The teams comprise of football, volleyball, soccer and men's and women's cross country.
To be eligible for the award student-athletes must of 1) participated in at least half of their team's competitions; 2) achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average at the end of the most recently completed term; 3) completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky institution.
The Bears 54 student-athletes on the team are four more than the fall of 2018. The 2019 Big Sky Tournament champions soccer team placed a whopping 20 student-athletes on the All-Academic team to lead all Big Sky soccer programs. Football had the second most representatives on the list for Northern Colorado with 16, followed by the 2019 Big Sky Regular Season and Tournament champions volleyball team with nine. Men's cross country had six student-athletes on the list and women's cross country three.
Three UNC student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic achievements earlier this season in Luke Nelson, Maddie Barkow and Taylor Els. Nelson was named a second team CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree while Barkow earned the United Soccer Coaches Scholar first team All-Region honor. Els was a second team CoSIDA Academic All-District pick for the second straight year.
As a conference, the Big Sky had 55 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Four of those came from UNC: Alison Zigler (women's cross country), Hailey Collier (soccer), Michaela Boon (volleyball) and Noah Sol (football). Northern Colorado contributed 36 of the Big Sky's 391 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
