UNC assistant volleyball coaches Jon Haruguchi and Pi'i Aiu are promoted to associate head coach
GREELEY – Success of a program goes well beyond the head coach. UNC volleyball head coach Lyndsey Oates recognizes the importance of assistant coaches and the hard work of her assistants Jon Haruguchi and Pi'i Aiu with the program elevating both to the title of Associate Head Coach.
"Jon and Pi'i are both very deserving of being named Associate Head Coaches. We work as a team of coaches and we all do our part to make sure we are a championship program," Oates said. "They have the years of experience behind them and are well respected among their peers and within our program. They both could easily have head coaching jobs elsewhere. We are very fortunate to have them here at UNC. This title change is just a small token of our appreciation."
Haruguchi and Aui helped guide Northern Colorado volleyball to its best season as a Division I program in 2019. They won the Big Sky regular season and conference tournament championship advanced to the program's fifth Division I NCAA Tournament. All of the victories added up to 26 for the season, the most since UNC joined the DI ranks in 2006. Along the way, the Bears won a Big Sky record-tying 17 conference matches and had the regular season MVP, Daisy Schultz, four All-Big Sky honorees and the tournament MVP, Kailey Jo Ince.
UNC volleyball has won 73 matches since Haruguchi joined the staff in 2016 and advanced to two postseason tournaments. He has helped coach 12 All-Big Sky selections including the 2019 MVP, Daisy Schultz, and 2018 Newcomer of the Year, Lauren Hinrichs.
In Aiu's first season with Northern Colorado, they put together their best year since becoming a Division I program in 2006. His experience made UNC one of the best teams at closing out sets and turn in one of the best offensive performances of the year averaging 13.41 kills per set. He coaches the Bears middles including second team All-Big Sky selection Lauren Hinrichs.
