Freshman Abbi Fliener shot a 68 during day one of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic
FORT COLLINS – In her first career collegiate event freshman Abbi Fleiner tied the University of Northern Colorado women's golf 18-hole record by shooting a 4-under, 68 during the second round of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic. She tied teammate Beah Cruz's record that was set last season at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.
Her strong second round along with shooting a 4-over, 76 in the first round has her tied for second place entering the final round at even-par. The 68 ties for the low round of the tournament as well.
Fleiner wasn't the only Bear to have a great round on Monday, so did sophomore Jenna Chun. She shot a 3-under, 69 during the second round to move to 3-over for the tournament and in a tie for fourth place.
Fleiner and Chun were birdie machines during the second round combining to put 12 on their scorecards. Chun was as low as seven under during her round which included a streak of four straight birdies on holes 10-13.
In the first round, Fleiner started strong with birdies on three of her first five holes. During the second round she had five birdies to just one bogey. She is tied with Southern Utah's Chanikan Yongyuan for most birdies in the tournament at eight each.
The lone eagle of the tournament so far also belongs to a Bear in Beah Cruz who eagled the par 5 fifth hole during the second round.
Entering tomorrow's final round, Northern Colorado sits in a tie for 10th with Santa Clara sitting at 614 for the tournament. The Bears look to show big improvements like they did in the afternoon on Monday when they cut 14 strokes off their team score.
Portie's Perspective
"The Bears got off to a slow start in their morning, but I am extremely proud of the way they handled themselves on the course all day battling for every shot on a day when most of them didn't have their best. The afternoon was a little more like us and we had some exceptional rounds out of freshmen Abbi Fleiner who shot a sixty-eight, which ties the eighteen-hole school record, and sophomore Jenna Chun's sixty-nine, who had it to seven under through fifteen holes today. Both are in the Top 4 individually.
I am looking forward to a great day tomorrow as I see so much promise out of this team!"
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado looks for a strong finish in Tuesday's final round that is set for a 9 am MT shotgun start. The Bears will tee off on holes 12-15 along with 17 and 18. Live results of the round can be found here.
