Rico Montoya became the first UNC wrestler to be a first team Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America selection
Rico Montoya continues to make history for his performance both as a student and wrestler at Northern Colorado, earning a spot on the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large first team. Montoya becomes the first UNC wrestler to be named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection. He is the second Academic All-America selection this season for UNC, joining volleyball's Brittany Lawrence who was a second team All-America selection for volleyball in the fall.
Â
"Congratulations to Rico on this well-deserved honor for his hard work both on the mat and in the classroom," Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said. "This honor not only reflects the dedication of Rico as a student-athlete but also head coach Troy Nickerson, the Academic Success staff and UNC faculty to ensure a complete student-athlete experience."
Â
Montoya made history for the Bears earlier this year when he was named the Big 12 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the first in program history.
Montoya, who graduated with his master's in Sports Administration in May after he completed his bachelor's degree in Human Services in just three years, earned a perfect 4.00 GPA this past season
Earlier this year, Montoya was named to the All-Big 12 academic first team and was one of four wrestlers to earn a 4.0 in the conference. Along with the conference honors, Montoya was a three-time NWCA All-Academic Team honoree.
Montoya qualified for the NCAAÂ Championships for the third-consecutive season after dropping down a weight class to 125 lb. He also placed sixth at the Big 12 Championships for the third consecutive year.
Montoya became the first Southern Scuffle finalist in program history and had a 16-11 overall record during his final year at UNC. He finished his career with 78 wins.
Â
With the selection of Montoya, Northern Colorado's total Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America selections in the Division I era moves to eight and he is the fourth to be named to the first team. Since the program's beginning in 1952, 22 Northern Colorado student-athletes have earned first team Google Cloud CoSIDA All-America honors and 69 overall.
