Coby Welch is tied for seventh after the first day of the NCAA Men's Golf Regional
PULLMAN, Wash. – Northern Colorado men's golf teed off the first round for the NCAA Regionals in Pullman, Washington on Monday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. It was an up and down day for the Bears as Coby Welch sits in the top 10 after the first day, tied for seventh by shooting a 4-under, 66. As a team, UNC is in 12th place with a 3-over, 283.
The Bears teed off on the back nine as Welch shot a two-under 33 on it with birdies on the 14th and 18th hole. He did not have a bogey on his scorecard until the par 3 sixth, where dropped back to 2-under. With birdies on hole No. 7 and 8, he shot a matching 33 on the front nine leading to a total of 66. Welch ended up with five birdies on the round.
Freshman Jack Castiglia showed no signs of nerves in his first ever NCAA regional paring the first 15 holes he played. The streak ended on this 16th hole of the day, the par 4 seventh with a birdie. Castiglia ended up shooting an even-par 70 with a bogey on his next to last hole. Going into tomorrow's second round he is tied for 37th on the leaderboard.
Joshua Matz is tied with his teammate Castiglia at even-par, as he also shot a 70. Matz eagled the par 4, 369 yards 15th hole, and entered the turn at 2-under. It was a mixed bag of results as he ended up shooting 2-over during the second nine to finish at even-par.
Li Chen and Nick Sharp rounded out the UNC lineup shooting 80 and 77, respectively on the day.
Prenzlow's perspective
"We were just one score short of having a good day. For the most part everyone did a good job today on the course but we had a few bad holes as a team. It was great to see Coby play well and Josh was solid today other than one miscue late in his round. Jack just keeps getting better and is fun to watch and coach. Li and Nick, just need to relax and play like we all know they are capable. As a team we need to come out the next two days and play like the Bears have played most of the year and hope the putts drop."
What's ahead
The Bears look to put themselves within striking distance of the top 5 during tomorrow's second round. UNC enters it 10-shots back of fifth place Michigan State. The top 5 teams at the end of the tournament advance to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas May 24-29. UNC tees off starting at 9:55 am MT.
