Four Bears shot even-par or better during the second round of the Pullman Regional
PULLMAN, Wash. – Four Northern Colorado men's golfers shot even-par or better during the second round of the Pullman Regional on Tuesday. Coby Welch and Joshua Matz each shot 3-under 67s for the day, while Jack Castiglia and Nick Sharp put even-par 70s on the leaderboard. The Bears improved their team score by six shots on Tuesday with a 6-under 274.
UNC still sits in 12th place for the tournament but is just one stroke away from cracking the top 10 as Michigan State and Purdue are each tied at 4-under through 36 holes.
Welch, who started the day in a tie for seventh, moved up two spots to crack the top 5 with his 3-under, 67. Once again the Bears started on the 10th hole and Welch came out and birdied the opening two holes. He ended up shooting a 33 on his first nine with three birdies and a bogey. On the front nine, Welch added two more birdies to his round as he shot a 34 to improve his two-day score to 7-under 133.
After sitting at even-par through round one, Joshua Matz will enter tomorrow's round in 25th place at 3-under. He shot a 3-under 67 on Tuesday without a bogey until his 11th hole played. Matz equaled Welch with five birdies for the round.
One other Bear also had five birdies in his round, in junior Nick Sharp. He was 2-under when he made the turn and ended the day shooting an even-par 70.
Freshman Jack Castiglia put his second straight 70 on the scorecard Tuesday to remain even-par for the tournament. Like his three other teammates, Castiglia shot a 33 on his first nine holes, before posting a 37 on the second.
Prenzlow's perspective
"It was great to have four quality scores today! Coby and Joshua were excellent, Nick and Jack were steady all day. We need one of those Bear rounds tomorrow where the birdies fall in bunches! We will come out and perform hard and hopefully get things going early. No matter what, we have a chance to overtake some quality programs and this bunch I know will compete to their fullest!"
What's Ahead
Going into tomorrow's final round, Northern Colorado aims to make up a nine-stroke deficit to crack the top 5 and advance to the NCAA Championships. The Bears will tee off at 8:55 am MDT. Live results of the final round can be found at GolfStat.com.
