Beah Cruz broke the low round record for UNC women's golf at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic
MARICOPA, Ariz. – Behind the record setting second round by sophomore Beah Cruz, Northern Colorado women's golf sits in fourth place after the first day of Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. Cruz broke the program's record for lowest 18-hole score by firing off a 4-under, 68 during the afternoon round.
UNC sits in fourth place, just a stroke out of second, shared by Santa Clara and New Mexico State, and three away from first, held by UTEP, with a team score of 589 through 36 holes. The team took five strokes off its score during the afternoon session shooting a 292 in it after a 297 during the opening 18 holes.
With her 4-under, 68 in the second round Cruz sits in a tie for second place overall with a 5-under, 139 at the end of the first day. She sprinkled her scorecard with six birdies in the second round, doubling her total from the first round. Cruz will enter the final round three strokes out of first place, held by Suthavee Chanachai from New Mexico State.
It was not just Cruz who was a key to UNC's strong day on the golf course, but the whole team. Nicole Polivchak sits in a tie for 26th with an overall score of 149. She improved by a stroke from the first to second round going from a 75 to 74. Teammate Marisa Hisaki made the biggest improvement from the morning to afternoon improving by four strokes. After shooting a 77 in the opening round, she responded with a 73 during the second that included a pair of birdies.
Portie's perspective
It was a great day for the Bears as we were led by sophomore Beah Cruz firing an 18-hole single round record of 4-under, 68. She is tied for second individually, shooting 71 in the first round and we sit in fourth place as a team, just three shots back of UTEP. I'm proud of the whole team, as they have worked extremely hard on their short games lately and it paid off today around a tricky golf course, in Southern Dunes. Beah didn't get in much trouble today as she hit the ball great. She saw some putts go in, which gave her some confidence. Nicole Polivchak also had a nice day as she shot 75-74, and sits in 26th. Marisa Hisaki, freshman Jenna Chun, and Morgan Sahm continue to play solid golf as well and I'm looking forward to having us play in the leaders pairing tomorrow and having a good chance at the team title! It will take all five Bears staying patient and solid with their great short games!
What's ahead
Northern Colorado looks for its second top 5 finish of the season tomorrow when they tee off during the final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. Meanwhile, Cruz pursues the program's first individual tournament win since Kala Keltz in 2016.
