Beah Cruz sits in a tie for first place after day one of the Big Sky Championship
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Behind the strong first round of sophomore Beah Cruz, Northern Colorado women's golf sits in a tie for sixth place with Northern Arizona at the Big Sky Championship. The Bears and Lumberjacks shot matching 11-over, 299s in the opening 18 of the 54-hole tournament. Preseason favorite Sacramento State leads after day 1, shooting a 2-over 290.
Cruz led the Bears by shooting a 3-under 69 with a strong back nine. The sophomore shot an even-par 36 on the front nine with a birdie on the second hole and bogey on the sixth. She finished her round strong with birdies on 16 and 18 after moving back into the red with her birdie on the par 3 12th. Cruz is tied with Sofie Babic of Sacramento State.
Junior Marisa Hisaki is in the top 15 of the individual standings after the first day of competition by shooting a 1-over, 73. She started the day by shooting a 2-over 38 on the front nine, before coming on strong in the back nine with birdies on 10, 13 and 14. Hisaki enters Saturday's second round in a six-way tie for 11th.
Freshman Jenna Chun had a good start to her first Big Sky Championship, sitting in a tie for 30th after shooting a 5-over, 77 on Friday. She placed a pair of birdies on her scorecard.
Portie's Perspective
"The Bears got off to a little bit of a slow start today on our front 9, but battled back into a tie for 6th place, with the help of Marisa's 73 and Beah's 69. They both played solid today and saw some putts go in, which always helps the confidence. Jenna was very good today as well, with it being her first Big Sky Championship round. She didn't get in much trouble but missed a few short putts that she normally makes. Morgan and Nicole were off in parts of their games today, but I look to have them bounce back the next two days, as their experience in big tournaments will help them. I am excited for what's ahead tomorrow for the Bears."
