UNC women's basketball hosts Southern Utah on Thursday for its Senior Night
For one final time seniors Savannah Smith and Shalise Fernander will step onto the Bank of Colorado Arena court on Thursday night when Southern Utah comes to town. Smith and Fernander will be honored before the game to celebrate their careers as Bears. The 7 pm tip-off is another key game down the stretch for UNC as they chase another Big Sky Regular Season title, along with a third straight 20-win season.
Opening Tip
• Savannah Smith became the program's all-time leading scorer on Saturday against Weber State. She scored 36 points to pass former teammate D'shara Strange for first place. Smith has 1,898 points in her career.
• Ali Meyer is now just the second player in UNC history to grab 300 rebounds. She recorded her eighth straight game with 10-plus rebounds, grabbing 11 on Thursday.Â
• The Bears extended their win streak to four games with the 75-61 win over Weber State
• Thursday night is Senior Night for UNC basketball. Before the game, the Bears will honor its two seniors in Savannah Smith and Shalise Fernander.
• Southern Utah split its games last week defeating Montana and falling to Montana State.Â
• The win against Montana snapped a six-game losing streak for the T-Birds.Â

 Northern Colorado used a strong second half to defeat Weber State 75-61. In the game, Savannah Smith became the program's all-time leading scorer as she dropped 36 points on the Wildcats. She was joined in double figures scoring by Alexis Chapman (16) and Micayla Isenbart (11).
Scouting the Thunderbirds
Southern Utah has shown improvement on the court under first year head coach Tracy Sanders, including a big non-conference win over BYU. The Thunderbirds are 7-21 this season and 4-15 in Big Sky play. SUU has some balanced scoring with three players averaging in double figures this season. Harley Hansen leads the team with 11.8 ppg and is first on the team in steals with 2.2 a game. Rebecca Cardenas averages 10.8 points and leads the team in rebounds (6.8) and assists (3.7). The third scorer in double figures is Breanu Ried right at the 10.0 mark.Â
Teams have been able to score easily against the SUU defense. Opponents are shooting 45.4 percent against the T-Birds and averaging 71.3 points a game.
History against Southern Utah
When Southern Utah joined the Big Sky in the 2012-13 season, they won four of the first five meetings between the two teams, but now Northern Colorado has won the last seven meetings. UNC leads the all-time series at 9-4 including a win in the first game between the two teams in 1980.Â
Against the Big Sky
UNC joined the Big Sky in the 2006-07 season and has gone 130-96. Overall, the team is 143-102 against Big Sky schools.
Around the Big Sky
Teams are battling it out for seeding for next week's Big Sky Tournament in Boise, Idaho heading into the final week of the regular season. UNC trails Idaho by a game entering the week. Idaho can clinch at least a share of the conference title on Thursday night, while the Bears need UI to lose at least once for a shot at the regular season title.
On This Date
On this date last season UNC played in its quarterfinal game of the Big Sky Tournament in Reno, defeating Montana 78-69. Overall, the Bears are 2-8 on the date with the other win coming in 2015 over North Dakota.Â
20 Win season
With their next win, Northern Colorado will have its third consecutive 20-win season, the best stretch in program history UNC has put together six 20-plus win seasons.

The regular season comes to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Bears will face Northern Arizona at 2 pm. UNC then heads to Boise for the Big Sky Tournament starting on March 11. Northern Colorado has secured a first round bye and will play its first game on March 12 with seed and game time still to be determined.Â
