Irv Brown who was a sports icon in the state of Colorado and got his start at Northern Colorado passed away Sunday morning at the age of 83.
Brown was a multi-sport star for the Bears being named all-district in both basketball and baseball during his time in Greeley and he was inducted into the Northern Colorado Hall of Fame in 2001.
Following his time as a Bear, Brown went on to a 25-year coaching career at both the high school and college level. As if that wasn't enough he also had a 25-year stint as an NCAA Basketball official and worked six Final Fours.
While his accomplishments in and around the game are hall of fame worthy, most people likely know Brown for his time as a member of the sports media. He worked for ESPN, CBS, Altitude Sports and Prime Sports. In addition to his national work, Brown was a pioneer in the Denver sports talk radio boom.
Aside from being a member of the UNC Hall of Fame, he was inducted into the Colorado Sports and Colorado High School Sports Halls of Fame. He was recognized by Sports Illustrated as 50 Great Sports Figures from Colorado and named by Referee Magazine 20 Who Made a Difference.
In a small twist of faith, Dave Hall played baseball for Brown at the University of Colorado and has become a noted college basketball referee and has worked a number of Final Fours. Hall was on campus as part of the crew working the Northern Colorado vs. Montana State men's basketball game on Monday night.
