Three Bears Advance to Saturday at Cliff Keen

Northern Colorado will have three wrestlers competing in the consolation matches on day two
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Northern Colorado wrestling competed in day one of the 2019 Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday, with three wrestlers advancing to the second day. Mosha Schwartz, Jacob Seely and Dalton Robertson advanced in the consolation bracket for their respective weight classes and will begin Saturday in the second round of eight matches.
"I think our guys wrestled well today," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "We came away with many ranked wins and lost of positives. Our guys will look to finish strong tomorrow by placing at on the toughest tournaments in the country."
Advancing to Day Two
Schwartz continues to wrestle at a veteran level, controlling his match against the No. 10 seed Tye Varndell of Edinboro for the 13-5 major decision win. The true freshman raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first period against Varndell, adding two takedowns and the riding time bonus in the third for victory in the 133-pound bracket.
Schwartz earned a 10-3 decision win in his first Cliff Keen match over Cal Poly's Jose Fernandez. Schwartz went against No. 2 Montorie Bridges in his next match, losing a close 4-3 decision. Now in the consolation bracket second round of 16, Schwartz got the fall on Clarion's Seth Koleno quickly at 1:21.
Seely advanced with a 6-4 win over NC State's Tyrie Houghton in the consolation first round of eight. In the match, Seely had two takedowns on Houghton and a pair of escapes to earn the win at 197-pounds.
Seely made his return to Las Vegas, opening with a 4-2 decision win over Iowa State's Joel Shapiro. Seely would drop his next match, 10-4 against No. 4 Tanner Sloan from South Dakota State. Now in the consolation bracket, Seely extended his tournament with a 4-3 decision win over CSU-Bakersfield Dominic Ducharme in the consolation second round of 16.
Robertson advanced in the consolation bracket with a 1-0 decision win over the No. 11 seed Jon Spaulding from Edinboro. Robertson rode out Spaulding in the second period to earn the bonus point, moving onto Saturday in the 285-pound bracket.
In his first match of the day, Robertson went against Ohio State and No. 4 seed, Chase Singletary. Robertson fought hard against Singletary but came up short in a 2-1 decision. Robertson would keep his weekend in Las Vegas going with a fall on Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward at 3:36 in the consolation second round of 16.
Starting out at Cliff Keen
In his first career match at Cliff Keen, Jace Koelzer won a 5-2 decision over Edinboro's Lucas Rodriguez as the No. 7 seed. Kloelzer dropped a tough match against the No. 7 seed Alex Thomsen from Nebraska, 14-5. In the consolation round of 16, Koelzer advanced after getting the fall on Kent State's Tomas Gutierrez at 2:26. Koelzer was forced to take a medical forfeit in the second period against Malik Heinselman from Ohio State.
Brody Lamb continued to show his growth this season, earning the fall on Northwestern's Jack Tolin at 3:32 in the consolation round. The redshirt-freshman followed up with a 17-2 tech fall over Vinny Vespa from Hofstra. Lamb struggled in his first match against Nebraska-Kearney's Wesely Dawkins, who got the fall on Lamb at 4:48. Lamb's tournament would end in the first round of eight, dropping a 10-3 decision to Cal Poly's Jake Ryan.
Alan Clothier opened this Cliff Keen Invite as the No. 13 seed and earned a 7-0 decision win over Utah Valley's Ashton Seely. His next match was more difficult against No. 4 seed, Lou Deprez. Clothier lost a major decision to the Binghamton 184-pounder, 8-0. The redshirt-junior came back with a vengeance, pinning Trent Tracy of Cal Poly at 4:01. Clothier would bow out of the tournament in close 6-5 decision to No. 12 Max Lyon.
Nathan Moore started his Cliff Keen experience and would get the fall on Grand Canyon's Marcus Lopez at 1:02. The true freshmen dropped his first match to No. 2 Jarrett Degan(Iowa State), 8-2, and would exit the tournament on a 8-4 decision to Jacob Butler(Oklahoma).
Team Standings
Northern Colorado is 14th with 24.5 points in the team standings after day one. Wyoming is 13th with 30.5 points and Michigan is 15th with 23 points.
The Bears combined for five falls and one tech fall on Friday.
