Snowy Senior Day as Bears and Grizzlies Draw
10/27/2019 5:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Northern Colorado ended its regular season with a 1-1 against Montana
It was a snowy Senior Day for Northern Colorado soccer, as they battled Montana to a draw on Sunday afternoon.
UNC honored Taylor Lile, Anika Shelrud, Kylee Duren, Avery Smith and Kenzie Engelkins before the game
The teams played two overtime periods, but neither team could breakthrough in the difficult weather.
"There were two good teams going at it in tough conditions today," head coach Tim Barrera said. "It was one of those games that one breakdown is the difference. We played well and so did they. I thought the defense did a good job. [Ashley] did well. On that first goal, there were a lot of people in the box, otherwise she played well. The offense did a good job in the second half to be more aggressive."
The Grizzlies scored first, off a corner kick from Rita Lang in the 14th minute. There was traffic in the box, making it difficult for Ashley Franza to track Lang's shot.
Despite the goal, Franza had good day in net, collecting five saves, while fighting through the snow and wind.
UNC would get the equalizer in the 36th minute, off an own goal by the Grizzlies. Mackenzie Bray fired an arching shot from the left side that the Montana defenders could not
handle and hit the ball into their own net.
The Bears pushed the pace in the second half, recording six total shots. Olivia Seddon was awarded a free kick in the 88th minute and put a shot on goal but it was saved by the Grizzlies, Claire Howard.
The game moved to overtime with the score tied at one. Haley O'Nan fired a line drive shot in the first overtime period but could not get it past Howard. Lexi Pulley had a chance in the second overtime period, but the shot was also saved. The Bears and Grizzlies ended the game in a 1-1 draw.
