The initial NCAA Division I wrestling coaches' panel rankings were released on Thursday, with Rico Montoya and Jacob Seely earning spots in their respective weight classes. Montoya is ranked No. 17 in the 125 lb weight class and Seely is tied for the No. 17 spot at 197 lb.
This is the first of four rankings that will be released prior to the 2019 DI Wrestling Championships. The final rankings will help to determine qualifiers and seeding for the championships.
On the season, Montoya leads the team with an 11-4 overall record, including 8-4 against DI opponents. Montoya made UNC history at the Southern Scuffle earlier this month when he became the first finalist in program history, placing second at the tournament. Â During the Scuffle, Montoya defeated Iowa State's Alex Mackall in a 4-0 decision, who is ranked No. 25 by the coaches' panel. Montoya has a 4-3 record in dual matches, while leading the team with four falls and four tech falls. This past weekend, Montoya went 2-0, with a fall over Cal Poly's Benny Martinez and 19-3 tech fall against CSU Bakersfield's Edward Flores.
Seely has posted a 10-4 overall record this season, going 10-4 against DI opponents and placing fifth at the Scuffle. In Chattanooga, Seely picked up wins over several ranked opponents including a fall over Appalachian State's Randall Diabe(No. 17) and a 9-0 major decision over Edinboro's Dylan Reynolds(No. 29). Seely started the year off with a 12-9 dual win over West Virginia's Noah Adams(No 32). In duals this season, Seely has a 6-2 record and is also tied for the team lead with five decision wins. Seely went 1-1 over the weekend with a 6-4 decision against CSU Bakersfield's Matt Penyacsek.
Both Montoya and Seely look to make the trip to Pittsburgh in March, with Montoya trying qualify for the third consecutive season. Seely is on his way to qualifying for the second consecutive season.
The next set of rankings will be released on Feb. 14 by NCAA. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
Northern Colorado travels to take on No. 16 Northern Iowa on Friday at 6 pm(MST) and North Dakota State on Sunday at 1 pm. Both matches are streamed live on Flowrestling.com and live scoring is available on Trackwrestling.com.
