UNC baseball earned a key win on Friday afternoon in walk-off fashion over UTRGV
GREELEY Colo. – It's crunch time for Northern Colorado baseball, with just two weekends of Western Athletic Conference series remaining in the season. The Bears started the stretch run on the right foot with a 4-3 walk-off single over UT Rio Grande Valley.
How It Happened
UTRGV struck first by putting together a two-out rally in the second inning. The Vaqueros worked four straight walks with two outs to score the initial run but left the bases loaded to end the inning.
UT Rio Grande Valley extended its lead to 3-0 with a single and double to begin the third inning. A sacrifice fly brought home the first run and a UNC error made it 3-0.
Northern Colorado responded in the bottom half of the third to even the game at three. Following a fly out to begin the inning, Dean Lawson and Matt Burkart hit back-to-back singles putting a pair on for Jack Pauley. The Bears big bat hit a bomb to left field tying the game at 3.
An inning later, Northern Colorado took its first lead of the game. UNC loaded the bases with consecutive Brett Minnick and Tyler Yamaguchi singles and an Andrew Miller hit by pitch. Lawson, delivered for the team on the 2-1 pitch, beating out a double play ball to keep the inning going and score Minnick.
Both team's offenses were held in check until the seventh when UTRGV evened the game at 4. A leadoff single came around to score with two outs.
Northern Colorado's bullpen shut down the Vaqueros bats down the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, UNC left two on base in the eighth but did not let the opportunity slip away in the ninth.
It took just two batters for the Bears to earn the walk-off win. Lawson doubled to leadoff the inning and Burkart drove him home with a single to center, scoring the speedy Lawson.
Game Changer
Matt Burkart led the Bears with a 3-for-5 day at the plate including the game-winning hit. He drove in a run and scored once as well.
Stat to Know
The Northern Colorado pitching staff did a good job against UTRGV's bats holding them to just five hits in the win.
Game Notes
- Justin Mulvany took over on the mound to start the fourth inning and pitched a strong five innings. In relief, he allowed just one run on two hits while striking out six.
