Northern Colorado men's golf moved its way up the leaderboard on Tuesday with a strong team performance
BRYAN, Texas – Northern Colorado put together a solid second round at the NCAA Bryan Regional to move up four spots on the leaderboard with a 287. Li Chen led the charge for UNC with a 3-under 69. The Bears sit in eighth with a team total of 593, three ahead of UNC Wilmington and four strokes behind Kentucky.
Chen started his day with a birdie on the par 4 first but went to one over when he double-bogeyed the second hole. He recorded a pair of birdies on the fifth and sixth hole before bogeying the ninth for an even-par 32 on the front nine. He played par golf through the first four holes on the back nine, before birdieing the 13th and eagling the par 5 14th. Chen pared his remaining holes to finish at 3-under 69.
Senior Andrew Romano also shot under par in the second round, with a 2-under 70. Romano was 1-over through the front nine with a birdie on the second hole and bogeys on the seventh and eighth. Like Chen, Romano shot a 3-under 33 on the back nine. He birdied the 15th, 17th and 18th hole.
After shooting under par on Monday, Joshua Matz shot a 3-over 75 to sit at +2 for the tournament. Coby Welch shot a 73 on Tuesday and is 7-over for the tournament. The final Bear competing in the regional in Marcus Tait shot an 83 in round two and is 23-over in the first two rounds.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"It was a nice round by the Bears today as we bested some really top-ranked programs. This is what team golf is all about, everyone playing their hardest to make good decisions and hit positive golf shots. Hopefully, we come out tomorrow and get things going our way. This team is capable of putting up very good scores, it would be fun to have a chance at the top five with a few holes to play! All the guys need to keep playing positive team golf!
