Northern Colorado men's golf closed out it's 2017-18 season at the Bryan Regional Wednesday.
BRYAN, Texas – Northern Colorado men's golf closed out its season at the final round of the Bryan NCAA Region on Friday, with some ups and downs in the round. The Bears finished 10th in the Region, ahead of ranked schools in Georgia and San Francisco by three and 10 strokes, respectively.
UNC's Joshua Matz finished tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard after shooting at 1-under 70 on Wednesday. It tied for his best round of the week, he also shot a 71 in Monday's opener. Matz was 1-over through the front nine but birdied the 14th and 15th hole to finish 1-under for the round and 1-over for the tournament.
Coby Welch strung together the most birdies on the round for the team with four. He ended the regional with a 2-over 74, shooting identical 37s on both sides. For the tournament, he finished tied for 50th with teammate Andrew Romano. Romano was 4-over on Wednesday with a 76. Li Chen and Marcus Tait shot an 85 and 80, respectively in Wednesday's round.
Host Texas A&M won the regional by shooting 27-under as a team, while Clemson, Baylor, UCLA, and Kentucky finished second through fifth to qualify for the NCAA Finals in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"It was not the Bears best day today, but everyone competed to the end and we actually did some good things today as well as this entire event. We beat two top 50 ranked schools, and all the guys played a good round or two. In a field like this, a poor round is hard to overcome. Our opening round really hurt us and we could not overcome being that far behind. We thank senior Andrew Romano for his four years and congratulate him on having credentials to be an All-American Scholar. With the players, we have coming back along with our three additions the Bears will back in postseason play soon!"
