Joshua Matz shot a 1-under 71 in the NCAA Bryan Regional First Round, team tied for 12th
BRYAN, Texas – Northern Colorado teed off in the first round of the NCAA Bryan Regional on Monday and saw both some good things and some not as much in the round. The Bears sit tied for 12th with UNC Wilmington at +18 (306). Big Sky Player of the Year Joshua Matz had a strong day for the team with a 1-under 71 to be tied for 12th on the individual board.
UNC started on the 10th hole on Monday and Matz enjoyed playing the back nine. After bogeying the par 4 13th, he strung together three straight birdies to go to -2 through seven holes. He finished his first nine at 1-under. Matz improved to -2 after the third hole on the front nine, but back to back bogeys on six and seven brought him back to even. He finished his round with a birdie on the par 5 eighth and par on the ninth.
Coby Welch and Li Chen tied for the second-best round of the day for Northern Colorado, each finishing at 6-over (78). Both golfers recorded two birdies on the round but struggled to string together pars at times. Chen started the front nine well with five straight pars after shooting a 4-over, 40 on the backside.
Big Sky individual champion Andrew Romano finished one shot behind his teammates with a 7-over 79 on Monday, while freshman Marcus Tait shot a 12-over, 74.
The Bears will look to make a move up the leaderboard on day two as they only trail San Francisco for 11th by two strokes and Georgia for 10th by three. Texas A&M holds the team leads after one day of play firing off a 9-under 279 Monday.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"It goes without saying we would have liked to have played better, but we did some good things. We actually putted well which is surprising as Bermuda grass greens are not something we are used to playing on. To shoot a low round tomorrow we really need much better iron play. This course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and he puts a precision on accuracy around the greens. We need to do a better job of putting our approach shots to the greens in the correct areas to have better birdie opportunities. Josh was solid all day and looks great again with his golf swing."
