Northern Colorado baseball falls to CSU Bakersfield late 3-2 Sunday
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball saw a strong effort from starter Troy Watson but fell in late to CSU Bakersfield 3-2 in their home finale.
How It Happened
Northern Colorado took the early lead when Matt Burkart crushed a 0-1 pitch to left for the solo home run.
The Bears stayed ahead 1-0 until the third inning. Watson, sat down the first six batters he faced before Jassen Oliver hit an infield single to leadoff the third. The Roadrunners used aggressive base running tagging up from first on a deep fly out to left-center placing the tying run in scoring position. Daniel Carrizosa drove home the run with a single to right.
Northern Colorado did keep the game tied for long as Brett Minnick singled and stole second to lead off the inning. He scored when Tyler Yamaguchi hit a bloop single to center making it 2-1 Bears.
In the fifth, UNC looked to have worked its way out of a two-out jam when Jack Pauley misplayed a fly ball allowing the second CSUB run to score and tie the game.
The Roadrunner's made a pitching change in the third following the Yamaguchi RBI single bringing in Naithen Dewsnap. That change proved to be key as Dewsnap shut down the Bears offense for the remaining 6 2/3 innings. Northern Colorado loaded the bases in the sixth for its best chance to break the tie, but Dewsnap and CSUB worked out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning. CSUB's second baseman Evan Berkey walked to start the 'Runners rally. Following stealing second, Berkey was driven home on Oliver's double down the right-field line. Bakersfield looked to have a chance to add to its lead, but Justin Mulvaney shut down the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
Tyler Yamaguchi walked with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a 1-6-3 double play ended the game and UNC's win streak.
Game Changer
CSU Bakersfield reliever Naithen Dewsnap came into the game with one out in the third and completely changed the game. The sidearm righty shut down the UNC lineup going 6 2/3 innings allowing no runs on two hits while striking out nine, walking two and hitting three batters to earn the win.
